How the estimate works

A full OAS pension needs 40 years of residence in Canada after age 18; with fewer years, you get 1/40 of the full pension for each complete year. You need at least 10 years to qualify. Under the Canada–Japan agreement, periods in Japan's public pension can count toward the 10 years, but the amount is still based on your years in Canada. Starting after 65 adds 0.6% a month, up to 36% at 70; if you are still adding years in Canada after 65, the higher of the two results is used, not both. OAS is reduced by 15% of net income above the yearly threshold.
