THE DETAILS MATTER

What these rankings mean.

Source: Statistics Canada table 18-10-0245-01, monthly average retail prices in CAD. Each ranking uses the region’s latest published month and the same calendar month 12, 36 or 60 months earlier. Both endpoint prices must exist; a zero base is excluded. No missing value is replaced with zero.

Percentage change = (latest price ÷ earlier price − 1) × 100. Dollar change = latest price − earlier price, per published quantity. Ranks use unrounded percentages; equal changes are ordered by product name. Only increases appear in the increases ranking and only decreases in the decreases ranking.

The ranking covers eligible published series, not all groceries or all brands. Food & drink excludes the published detergent, deodorant, shampoo and toothpaste series, which appear under Household & personal care. Average prices can change with brand, promotion and purchase mix. These are not CPI inflation rates or matched-brand price comparisons. Product histories retain the source status codes.

Results use a rolling reference month and can change after monthly refreshes or source revisions. Articles should record their comparison months and retrieval date. Planned topics are placeholders; no vacancy or restaurant rankings have been collected or calculated here yet. Wage comparisons are available on their own page.
